Kimberly Anne Makela
Member since 06/2007
Kimberly Anne Makela (aka "Quaker Anne") is an author of several books about simple living skills, hand crafts and more including "Milk Based Soaps" (Casey Makela), "Making Natural Milk Soap" and "The Midwife's Herbal". She is the author of the online children's Christian farm stories - "Quaker Anne's Children's Stories". She and her husband Bill home schooled 3 of their children from elementary school through high school one of which has recently been accepted to MSU Law College, the other 2 operating successful entrepreneurial businesses.
Kimberly is the founder of 2 private schools; Michigan School of Traditional Midwifery & Herbology - Michigan's first licensed vocational school for midwives and students of natural parenting (1988), and The Ancient Arts Folk School which teaches simple living skills with a Christian emphasis (1986).
Kimberly and her husband were endorsed performers with the Michigan Touring Arts for nearly a decade with their award winning elementary children's musical program "Casey & Mac - Songs & Stories for Little People." They recorded 2 children's music albums in the 1980's.
Kimberly is now a semi-retired homebirth midwife who works primarily in home birth practice with plain communities (Amish & Old Order Mennonites) and devotes her time otherwise to teaching simple living workshops and women's retreats which foster traditional Christian ideals and biblical principals while also working on her ongoing Christian ministry project of writing free children's Christian farm stories and publishing them online (www.quakerfarm.com).
A passionate supporter of the right to home school, Kimberly was an enthusiastic legal activist for a home schooling mother who was arrested in the 1990's and brought up on charges of "truancy" for not sending her children to public school. The case would have set a dangerous precedent in Michigan but through determined and relentless advocacy headed by Kimberly Makela, the charges were dropped and the mother released from jail.
My Mission Statement
My personal mission is to empower parents to believe in their ability to really educate their children in a meaningful way. Home schooling can seem like, and sometime is, a daunting task and it is not always easy to feel like we are making the most of the brief amount of time that we have with our children in childhood. A true gift from God, our children provide us with the greatest opportunity for investment of self that we can ever make - not only for what we gain by the lessons they teach us, but for what our children can and will achieve from such a priceless opportunity to learn through us.
