Karla Akins
Member since 01/2011
Born in Kansas City, Missouri, and abandoned at birth, Karla Akins has ministered in the United States and Eastern Europe as a pastor’s wife, speaker, teacher, singer, pianist and violinist. Karla is the mother of four boys and one girl and was a foster parent for ten years. Three of her children have cognitive and mental disabilities including autism. Two of her children are adopted. Her five granddaughters have renewed her love for all things sparkly.
She has homeschooled for more than 24 years, including seven years of cottage schooling 15 students in a one room schoolhouse setting. She has boundless experience teaching multi-levels, children with disabilities, and children with behavioral issues.
Her column, The Fort Wayne Homeschooling Examiner, is a top ranking site on Examiner.com. She is published in the What Really Happened series of books by Bramley Books, is a book review blogger, a contributing blogger for ACFW Hoosier Ink, maintains several blogs of her own, contributes to her local newspaper and writes for Hub Pages and Associated Content online.
She is the founder of PALS: People Assisting Little Souls, a program that helps children and their families living with disabilities attend church classes and services with their age-mates.
She attended Wichita State University and Kingsway Theological Seminary. She has a nontraditional bachelor’s degree in Pastoral Theology and a Master’s and Doctorate in Christian Education. She’s a member of American Chrisitan Fiction Writers, American Christian Writers, Faith Writers, Christian Motorcycle Association and Daughters of the American Revolution. She received a diploma of graduation from the Institute of Children's Literature.
Her favorite scriptures come from Psalm 139:13-17:
"For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast covered me in my mother's womb.
I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works;
and that my soul knoweth right well.
My substance was not hid from thee, when I was made in secret,
and curiously wrought in the lowest parts of the earth.
Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect; and in thy book all my members were written, which in continuance were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them. How precious also are thy thoughts unto me,
O God! how great is the sum of them! "
Besides being an encourager to homeschool moms, Karla’s desire is for women everywhere to know that God has a plan for them no matter how many times they’ve been rejected or mistreated. No matter what mistakes they've made in looking for love and and acceptance, God is ready to forgive and grant them a brand new heart and life.
She has a passion for teaching women to embrace who they are regardless of their size, talents or abilities. Society convinces women they aren't worthy of a happy life because they don't look a certain way. God looks on the heart.
Her main message is one of grace.
Karla's hobbies include riding her motorcycle, playing piano and violin, her three dogs, and learning how to be a grandma.
My Mission Statement
To encourage all women, moms, homeschooling moms, moms of boys, moms of kids with special needs, and pastor's families. The main message is one of grace.
